WEMIHS Sustainable Livelihood Groups

The HIV/AIDS epidemic adds an element of vulnerability to pre-existing situations of food insecurity and poverty in many parts of Kenya.  Many households have rapidly depleted their resources and assets in order to cope.  Beyond the households directly affected, their surrounding communities are also faced with a heavy burden of care and support for OVC ( Orphans and Vulnerable Children).

Community responses and development programs designed to address HIV/AIDS in Kenya have largely focused on medical care, awareness education, counseling and prevention with limited consideration of the agricultural production and food security, and, conversely, the role that poverty and food insecurity play in the spread of the disease.

WEMIHS designed a sustainable livelihood project that utilizes Sustainable Livelihood Approach (SLA) which is people centered and endearing to pro-poor. The approach, besides uplifting the livelihoods of the beneficiaries through socio-economic interventions, also aims at informing the government policies designed to address poverty levels.

Our success have been seen whith some of our sustainable livelihood groups moving from thier small scale farming to now large scale horticultural farming. These groups though are faced with poor linkages to market, yet have the potential to produce big: Some of these groups include:
